How Wind Conditions Affect Your Kite Session

Twenty knots is not one condition. Direction, gust factor, thermal timing and sea state change what 20 knots feels like — and forecast models under-read this coastline daily.

Wind strength is only the first of four variables that decide your session. Direction determines whether a mistake pushes you home or out to sea, gust factor decides which kite size you take, the daily thermal cycle decides when to be on the water, and sea state decides how the power feels once you are. On the Egyptian Red Sea, forecast models routinely under-read the afternoon by three to five knots because they cannot resolve the local thermal.

Wind strength: what each band actually gives you

Assuming a 75 kg rider on a twintip:

  • 8 to 12 knots: not a twintip session. Foil territory, or a big wing
  • 12 to 15 knots: marginal. A 14 m gets you moving on flat water. Good for beginner kite handling and body dragging because everything happens slowly
  • 15 to 20 knots: the sweet spot. A 12 m, comfortable riding, ideal for lessons and for learning upwind
  • 20 to 25 knots: strong, fun, a 9 m. Beginner lessons still run but on smaller kites and in more chop
  • 25 to 30 knots: experienced riders on 7 m. Water gets rough and sessions get shorter
  • 30 knots and above: expert only, and most schools stop teaching

The band that matters most for a course is 15 to 20 knots. It is strong enough to hold a kite up and generate a water start, and gentle enough that a mistake is a swim rather than an incident. On this coast that band is the summer afternoon default.

Direction: the variable that decides safety

The prevailing wind here is northerly to north-westerly, funnelled down the Gulf of Suez and accelerated through the Strait of Gubal. At most Hurghada beaches that arrives side-onshore or side-shore, which is ideal — lose your gear and the wind pushes you back towards land.

The word "most" is doing real work in that sentence. The coastline bends, and a bay or lagoon oriented differently can convert the same regional northerly into a side-offshore or offshore flow at that specific beach. Offshore wind is the single most dangerous condition in kitesurfing and it disguises itself as calm water near shore.

The categories, from safest to worst:

  • Side-onshore: best. Blows along and slightly towards the beach, easy to ride out and easy to come back
  • Onshore: safe but awkward. Getting away from the beach requires good upwind riding, and a failure puts you on the sand
  • Side-shore: fine for experienced riders, straightforward for launching, no downwind safety margin
  • Side-offshore and offshore: never without boat cover, regardless of level

Check the orientation of your actual beach, not the regional forecast direction. A fifteen degree wind shift can move a spot from side-onshore to side-offshore.

Gustiness: why 20 knots is not one thing

A steady 20 and a gusty 20 are different sports. Look at the gap between average and gust on any forecast: if gusts exceed the average by more than about 30 percent, expect a gusty day and size down.

On this coast the gustiness usually comes from three sources.

Terrain. Wind coming over hills or off the desert edge arrives turbulent. Wind that has crossed open water for miles arrives smooth. The Red Sea northerly is generally smooth because it has a long clean fetch.

Buildings. The first 50 to 100 metres downwind of a built-up beach is dirty air, no matter what the forecast says. This is why a launch feels lumpy and the wind cleans up as soon as you get out.

Weather type. The khamsin, the hot dusty southerly that appears mainly between March and May, is inherently unstable. It can show a healthy average and still be unpleasant to ride, with big lulls between hard gusts. When the sky is hazy and the wind is from the south, expect to be surprised in both directions.

The daily thermal cycle

The Red Sea coast runs a reliable daily rhythm in the warm months, because the desert inland heats through the day and pulls sea air in behind it.

  • Early morning: light, often 8 to 14 knots, sometimes glassy
  • Late morning: filling in, usually between 10:00 and 13:00
  • Early to mid afternoon: peak, typically 15 to 25 knots in season
  • Late afternoon: easing as the land cools
  • Evening: dropping off, though the gradient can hold it up on strong synoptic days

Plan around this. Beginner sessions on land and in the shallows work best in the morning, when everything is slow. Riding sessions belong to the afternoon. In winter the thermal contribution largely disappears, so a winter day is whatever the gradient gives you, arriving on no particular schedule.

Reading a forecast for this coastline

Two things are worth knowing about the apps everyone uses.

First, the global models behind most forecasts run at a resolution that cannot see the Hurghada thermal properly. The result is a persistent tendency to under-forecast afternoon wind on this coast by roughly three to five knots in season. If the model says 14 knots at 15:00 in July, it is often closer to 18.

Second, model agreement matters more than model value. If two independent models show similar numbers for the same hour, the confidence is real. If they disagree by six knots, nobody knows, including the app.

Forecasts beyond five days on this coast are directional at best. Use them to plan a week, not a session.

Local knowledge beats both. A school that has watched the same bay for years knows which wind direction turns on which spot, and that is not information any model contains.

Sea state, tide and the shallow-water trap

The Red Sea is a narrow sea with limited fetch, so what you ride is wind chop rather than ocean swell. Chop builds through the afternoon as the wind holds, and it builds fastest where there is a long stretch of open water upwind. The flat water on this coast is in the lees — behind the islands at Abu Mungar and Gessum, behind headlands, and on the leeward flats at Tawila. That is why boat days exist.

Chop also changes your kite size. Choppy water absorbs power, so the same 20 knots feels less powered than it does on a flat lagoon. Sizing up slightly for chop is legitimate.

Tide is small here — roughly half a metre of range at Hurghada — but on a knee-deep sandbank half a metre is everything. At low water a spot that rode cleanly in the morning can have fins striking the bottom in the afternoon. Look at the water before you rig, not at the forecast.

When to call it off

There is no prize for riding a day you should not have.

  • The wind is offshore and there is no boat cover
  • Gusts are more than 40 percent above the average and you are on your smallest kite
  • You have been lifted involuntarily twice
  • Visibility has dropped in a dust event
  • You are tired, dehydrated or getting sloppy, which in Red Sea summer heat happens faster than you expect

Come in, drink something, and look at it again in an hour. The wind here is generous enough that you do not have to force a session.
