Wing Foil and Kite Foil in Hurghada

Foiling turns 10 knots into a session and makes Hurghada rideable in winter. What wing and kite foil need in terms of wind, water depth and gear, and which to learn first.

Foiling extends the Hurghada season into the light-wind days a twintip cannot use. A kite foil gets a 75 kg rider riding from around 8 to 10 knots, and a wing foil needs roughly 12 to 18 knots for the same rider. The catch nobody mentions in the marketing is water depth: a foil mast is 70 to 90 cm long, so the knee-deep lagoons that make this coast so good for beginners are unusable for foiling.

Why the Red Sea suits foiling, and where it does not

The case for foiling here is strong. The water is flat in the lees of the islands and headlands, the wind is steady rather than squally for most of the season, and there are long stretches of open water for the kind of distance riding that foils reward. Winter, which is thin on twintip days, becomes a proper season on a foil — 10 to 15 knots is enough.

The case against, or rather the constraint, is depth. To ride a foil you need enough water under you that the wing does not strike the bottom, and enough to fall into safely. As a working rule:

  • Absolute minimum to ride: around 1.2 m of water
  • Comfortable for learning, where you will fall repeatedly: 1.5 m or more
  • Reef and coral heads are a hard no. A foil wing hitting coral at speed damages the reef and the equipment, and puts a sharp carbon edge near your body

That rules out the standard beginner teaching lagoons. Foil sessions here run from deeper channels, from a boat, or from spots the school selects specifically for depth. Which spot is used on a given day depends on the wind angle and the operator, so ask when you book rather than assuming.

Wing foil: what it is and how quickly people learn it

A wing foil setup is a handheld inflatable wing, a foil board, and a hydrofoil. There are no lines, no bar, no launch window and nothing to relaunch from the water. You hold the wing, sheet it in, and pump the board onto the foil.

That simplicity is the reason for its popularity. The safety profile is genuinely lower than kitesurfing: nothing can drag you downwind on 24 m of line, and if it all goes wrong you let go of the wing and it flags harmlessly on its leash.

Learning time is honest but not instant. Most people need six to ten hours to reach sustained flights, split roughly:

  1. One to two hours: wing handling on land and in the water on a big board with no foil
  2. Two to three hours: riding the board on the water like a SUP, learning to steer and go upwind
  3. Three to five hours: adding the foil, touch-and-go flights, then sustained flight and turns

VDWS certifies wing foiling as its own discipline, so your progress can be logged the same way as kitesurfing.

Kite foil: light wind and long distance

If you already kite, foiling is a smaller step. The kite skills transfer directly; what changes is that all the power now goes into a wing under your feet rather than into the board's edge, and the sensations of speed and control are entirely new.

A kite foil rides in far less wind than a twintip. A 75 kg rider on a 12 m kite and a decent foil can get going in 8 to 10 knots, which converts most of the marginal winter days on this coast into sessions. It also rides upwind far better than a twintip, which is why kite foil is the discipline of choice for long-distance downwinders and island crossings.

Learning time for an existing kiter is typically four to eight hours to reach controlled riding, and the hardest part is unlearning the habit of edging hard.

Gear sizing for wing and foil

Wing sizes for a 75 to 85 kg rider:

  • 6 m: 12 to 18 knots
  • 5 m: 15 to 22 knots
  • 4 m: 20 to 28 knots
  • 3 m: 28 knots and above

Riders under 65 kg drop roughly one size across the board. Riders over 95 kg go up one.

Board volume for wing foiling, in litres:

  • Complete beginner: body weight in kg plus 30 to 40 L, so a 75 kg rider starts on 105 to 115 L
  • Intermediate: body weight plus 10 to 20 L
  • Advanced: at or below body weight, at which point you can no longer stand still on it

Front wing area, in square centimetres:

  • Beginner and light wind: 1800 to 2200
  • Intermediate all-round: 1200 to 1600
  • Advanced and fast: 800 to 1100

Bigger wings fly slower and lift earlier, which is what a beginner needs. The temptation to buy the small fast wing early is the most common and most expensive mistake in this sport.

For kite foiling, a 12 m kite plus a 1200 to 1500 cm² front wing is a solid light-wind setup for a 75 kg rider, moving to a 9 m and a smaller wing as the wind builds.

Which should you learn if you have one week?

If you have never done either:

  • Wing foil is the easier entry. No lines, no launch window, a shorter safety briefing, and you can practise on the board without the foil on day one
  • Kitesurfing on a twintip is still the faster route to actually planing across the water and having fun in your first three days

If you already kite confidently:

  • Kite foil is the obvious upgrade, and four to eight hours gets you riding
  • Wing foil is worth learning anyway, because it opens up days and spots where rigging a kite is impractical

If you have one week and no experience, most instructors would put you on a twintip first. Foiling on top of a solid twintip base is quicker than foiling from nothing.

Safety differences you need to take seriously

Foiling is not more dangerous than kitesurfing, but it is dangerous in different ways, and the equipment itself is the hazard.

  • A carbon foil wing has edges that cut. Falls should be flat and away from the board, never head-first towards it
  • A helmet is mandatory, not advisory. Impact vests are strongly recommended
  • Keep the board away from your body when you surface after a fall, and surface with an arm above your head
  • Never foil in shallow or reef water, both for the reef and for yourself
  • Give twintip riders a wide berth. A foil is fast and silent, and other riders will not hear you coming
  • Learn to fall properly before you learn to fly properly. Every instructor teaches it in that order for a reason

Practical notes for Hurghada

Foil and wing equipment is not carried by every rental fleet on this coast in every size, so if you are bringing your own board or intending to rent, confirm availability before you travel. Foil boards in particular are awkward to fly and are one of the few cases where bringing your own genuinely makes sense.

Winter here, from November to February, is the underrated foil season. The wind blows on roughly half the days at 12 to 20 knots, water is around 22 to 23°C, the beaches are empty, and a foil turns conditions most visitors write off into some of the best riding of the year.
