How to Choose the Right Kite Size

Rider weight, wind speed and board size decide your kite, in that order. A practical sizing chart for 55 to 95 kg riders plus the two-kite quiver that covers a Red Sea summer.

Kite size comes down to three variables: how much you weigh, how hard it is blowing, and how much board you have under your feet. As a rough anchor, a 75 kg rider on a standard twintip wants a 12 m in 15 to 20 knots, a 9 m in 20 to 25 knots and a 7 m above 25. Everything below is how to adjust that anchor for your own body, your own gear and the day in front of you.

Start with rider weight and wind speed

The chart below assumes a modern hybrid or delta kite, a twintip in the 135 to 140 cm range, and steady wind rather than gusty. Sizes are given in square metres.

Rider 55 to 65 kg:

  • 12 to 14 knots: 10 to 12 m
  • 15 to 20 knots: 9 m
  • 20 to 25 knots: 7 m
  • 25 to 30 knots: 5 to 6 m

Rider 70 to 80 kg:

  • 12 to 14 knots: 14 to 15 m
  • 15 to 20 knots: 12 m
  • 20 to 25 knots: 9 m
  • 25 to 30 knots: 7 m
  • 30 knots and above: 5 to 6 m

Rider 85 to 95 kg:

  • 12 to 14 knots: 17 m, or a foil
  • 15 to 20 knots: 13 to 14 m
  • 20 to 25 knots: 11 to 12 m
  • 25 to 30 knots: 9 m
  • 30 knots and above: 7 m

Read these as starting points, not rules. Two riders of identical weight on identical kites can want different sizes because one rides aggressively upwind and the other cruises.

Why the same 12 m feels different from day to day

Wind speed is the headline number, but four other factors change how a kite feels at the same speed.

Gustiness. A steady 20 knots and a gusty 20 knots are different sports. In gusty conditions most riders size down and use the extra depower rather than getting yanked in the peaks. On the Red Sea coast, the wind offshore of the buildings is usually smoother than the first 100 metres off a built-up beach, which is turbulent no matter what the forecast says.

Water state. Flat water lets you hold power and convert it into speed. Chop absorbs it, so choppy conditions can justify a slightly larger kite than the chart suggests. That is one reason the flat lagoons at Abu Mungar and Tawila feel more powered than open water at the same wind speed.

Kite design. A high-aspect performance kite and a low-aspect freeride kite of the same nominal size deliver very different power and very different wind ranges. A modern freeride kite may have a usable range of eight knots or more; a purpose-built race or freestyle kite has less.

Air density and altitude. Not a factor here at sea level, but worth knowing if you also ride at altitude, where you need a bigger kite for the same feel.

Board size compensates for kite size

Board area is the cheapest wind range you can buy. A larger board planes earlier and lets you hold a smaller kite deeper into light wind. A smaller board handles chop better and keeps you controllable when overpowered.

  • Light wind or a light rider: a wider, longer board, roughly 140 to 145 cm, is worth two square metres of kite
  • Strong wind: dropping to 132 to 136 cm reduces the tendency to skip and bounce
  • Big or heavy riders: err larger on the board before you err larger on the kite, because a huge kite in strong wind is harder to control than a big board is

If you own one board and rent kites, choose your board on the middle of your expected conditions and let kite size do the fine tuning.

Building a quiver for Red Sea conditions

The Hurghada summer sits mostly between 15 and 25 knots in the afternoons, with spring pushing higher. A two-kite quiver covers the large majority of it.

For a 70 to 80 kg rider:

  • 9 m and 12 m covers roughly 15 to 30 knots, which is most of May to September
  • Add a 7 m if you ride spring, when 25 to 30 knot afternoons are common
  • Add a 14 m only if you specifically want to ride marginal winter days, or buy a foil instead, which is a better answer to light wind

For a 55 to 65 kg rider, 7 m and 9 or 10 m does the same job. For 85 to 95 kg, plan on 9, 12 and 14 m as a three-kite core.

A practical alternative worth considering for a one-week trip: rent instead of flying a quiver. Two kites in a bag attract oversize charges each way, and a rental centre lets you swap size mid-session when the wind builds through the afternoon, which is exactly what it does here.

Signs you are on the wrong size

Overpowered:

  • You are riding with the bar permanently sheeted out and still feel pulled
  • The kite backstalls or luffs when you sheet in
  • You cannot hold an edge and get lifted off the water in gusts you did not choose
  • Your hands and forearms burn out after twenty minutes

Underpowered:

  • You have to pump the kite through the power zone constantly to keep moving
  • You sink between gusts and cannot get planing without a big dive
  • You slide downwind despite riding well
  • The board feels like it is dragging rather than planing

Getting lifted involuntarily is the one that matters. If it happens twice, land and change down. There is no prize for staying out on a kite that is flying you.

Kite type matters as much as size

A brief orientation, because size means nothing without shape.

  • Delta and hybrid kites: the default all-round choice. Easy water relaunch, wide wind range, forgiving. What most rental fleets carry and what most people should ride
  • C-shape kites: direct bar feel and strong pop for freestyle and wakestyle, narrower wind range, harder water relaunch
  • Foil kites: excellent low-end and efficiency, used for light wind, racing and snowkiting, but not the first choice for a beginner in salt water
  • High-aspect kites: better upwind and speed, less forgiving in gusts

For a rider learning or consolidating on the Red Sea, a delta or hybrid in the sizes above is the right tool. Refine later; get the size right first.

When you are genuinely unsure between two sizes on the day, take the smaller one. Underpowered is a wasted hour. Overpowered is an incident.

At 20 knots a 70 to 80 kg rider on a twintip is typically on a 9 to 10 m kite, a 55 to 65 kg rider on a 7 m, and a 90 kg rider on an 11 to 12 m. Adjust up in choppy water and down if the wind is gusty rather than steady.
Is it better to be slightly overpowered or underpowered?
Underpowered, without question. An underpowered session is disappointing but safe. Overpowered means less control, faster fatigue and the risk of being lifted involuntarily. If you are unsure between two sizes on the day, take the smaller kite and use a bigger board to compensate.
How many kites do I need for a week in Hurghada?
Two covers most of it. For a 70 to 80 kg rider a 9 m and a 12 m handle roughly 15 to 30 knots, which is the bulk of the summer season. Add a 7 m for spring, when 25 to 30 knot afternoons become common, or rent locally and swap sizes as the wind builds.
