Level 4 & 5 is the course that turns a student into a rider. Once you can get up on the board, the goal changes: hold a course, ride upwind, control power and speed deliberately, and handle your own kite from launch to landing.

You will also cover the judgement side — right of way in a busy spot, choosing the right kite for the day, tides, and enough basic meteorology to decide for yourself whether to go out. That is what independence actually means.

Who this is for

You can water start and ride short distances in both directions (Level 3 or equivalent).

Minimum age 8.

What you take away

What you will learn

  • Controlling power and speed while riding
  • Holding a course, including riding upwind
  • Riding switch and turning from switch
  • Independent kite launching and landing
  • Self-rescue and equipment retrieval on the water
  • Right of way, kite selection, tides and basic meteorology

Step by step

Course itinerary

Each stage starts where the one before it finished.

  1. 1

    Power and speed control

    Day 1

Riding at a chosen speed instead of the speed the kite gives you.

  2. 2

    Riding upwind

    Day 1

Edging, body position and kite position — how to finish where you started rather than walking back.

  3. 3

    Switch riding and transitions

    Day 2

Riding toeside, turning from switch and building comfort in both stances.

  4. 4

    Independence and judgement

    Day 2

Self-launch, self-landing, water retrieval, right of way, kite sizing, tides and weather.

What is included

  • Price per person, semi-private format — maximum 2 students per instructor
  • All equipment: kite, board, harness, helmet and water booties
  • Full insurance on the kite equipment
  • Drinking water and tea throughout the session
  • Free hotel transfer to and from any hotel inside Hurghada

What is not included

  • Personal travel and accident insurance
  • Food and meals
  • Transfer from Makadi Bay, Sahl Hasheesh or El Gouna (€20 per car)

What to bring

  • Swimwear and a towel
  • Reef-safe sun cream and sunglasses with a strap
  • A light long-sleeve top for sun protection
  • A refillable water bottle

Safety

Every session starts with a spot and weather briefing. You are taught the safety systems before the kite leaves the ground, and you practise releasing them on land before you use them on the water. Instructors stay within reach during water sessions, radios and a rescue boat cover the riding area, and sessions are shortened or moved if the wind becomes unsuitable. Helmets and impact protection are provided and worn during all lessons.

Meeting point

Kite Dates ECC centre, El Ahia Street, Hurghada — or your hotel lobby if you are using the free transfer.

Questions about this course

What does "riding upwind" mean and why does it matter?
It means finishing your run at or above the point you started from, instead of drifting downwind. Until you can do it you depend on someone walking or boating you back, so it is the single skill that separates a student from an independent rider.
Can I book this if I learned somewhere else?
Yes. Tell us what you can already do and we will assess your kite handling in the first session, then start at the right point rather than repeating what you know.

Social proof

What students say

  • Setzels

Really nice spot, good for everybody, from beginner to pro because of the conditions there — steady wind, not crowded. The instructors are very friendly and teach really well. After kiting you sit around with the crew, drink coffee or good tea and talk about your practice and what you can do better the next day. Pick-up service from the hotel was the best, and for free, and always on time. If the wind is not good you don’t go out, so you don’t pay for bad conditions — that’s great. I definitely recommend it. The kite rental was also very good, nice equipment.
