About this spot

Hurghada is where Kite Dates ECC is based and where every course runs. The coastline here is a long shelf of shallow sand and turquoise water, which is why it has become one of the most reliable places in the world to learn: for a long stretch out from the beach you can still stand up.

The prevailing wind is northerly, arriving side-onshore at most beaches — the safest direction for teaching, because a mistake pushes you back towards land rather than out to sea. Wind runs most of the year, with the strongest and most consistent period across the summer months.

For riders, the mix is useful: flat water inside the shelf for freestyle and first jumps, choppier open water beyond it, and the option to take a boat out to the islands when the forecast is right.

Getting there

Free hotel transfer to and from any hotel inside Hurghada is included with courses and day use. Transfers from Makadi Bay, Sahl Hasheesh and El Gouna cost €20 per car.

Hazards to know about

Shallow coral and seagrass in places — water booties are provided and should be worn. Boat traffic increases near the marina and hotel jetties; stay inside the marked riding area.

Is Hurghada good for complete beginners?
It is one of the best places in the world to start. The water stays shallow a long way out, so you can stand up and reset instead of swimming, and the northerly wind arrives side-onshore, which is the safest direction for learning.
When is the wind most reliable in Hurghada?
Wind blows for most of the year. The most consistent stretch runs through the summer months, roughly May to September, with spring and autumn also very good. Winter has more variable days but still delivers plenty of sessions.
Do I need a wetsuit in Hurghada?
For much of the year boardshorts and a rash vest are enough. A shorty is worth having in the cooler months from around December to February, particularly for long sessions.
